Your decision to visit Addu Atoll is a choice see a very different side of the Maldives. It is certainly not the usual tourist experience.Your hour-long flight from Male’ International Airport to Gan will be unforgettable. From a vantage point up in the sky, you will see Atoll formations, islands, and of course, the blue ocean glittering below you. Before landing in Gan, you will notice that the island is larger than the usual Maldivian isle. With its very substantial length of 5 km and width of 3 kilometres, it is what we would call a ‘real island’. The resort, nestled in a sleepy corner of the island about 1km away from the airport, is called the Equator Village because it is situated on one of the rare Maldivian resorts lying south of the Zero Degree Latitude.
All the islands in Addu Atoll are connected via a series of causeways. The length of all the Addu islands come up to approximately 18 kilometres. Gan, which is one of the four largest islands, has a population of 25,000. Since this allows you a rare tourist opportunity to interact with locals, excursions are a must, in order for you to get an impression of the real way of life of Maldivians.
Gan was a RAF base until March 1976. British troops were situated here during the Second World War and there is a War Memorial built by the British on the island. Maradhoo island – another in Addu Atoll, has a building that was used as an Armory by the British forces also during the war.
The British Loyalty, a cargo ship was torpedoed by the Japanese during the War lies on the seabed inside the Atoll near Maradhoo. It is one of the best wreck dive sites in the Maldives, along with its unspoilt marine life and verdant dive points. The Equator Village, just a short dhoni ride away, is therefore at a prime location for diving and snorkeling.
Hotel guests are allowed to move freely among the islands, to experience the local culture and the way of life of Maldivian people. The Equator Village has free bicycles for our guests who wish to explore the islands on their own. Apart from the local life, the Addu islands also boast the lushest vegetation in the Maldives. There is also a white sandy beach just 100 metres away from the hotel for the guests to enjoy.
Accommodation and facilitiesThe Equator Village has bungalows with 78 rooms, all nestled around a lovely garden courtyard with beautiful flowering shrubs. All rooms are spacious with an outside sitting area, and equipped with air-conditioners, refrigerators, and hot and cold showers. There is also satellite TV and IDD telephone services at the resort. In addition, the following facilities are also available: a fully equipped bar, a restaurant that opens out to the garden, and a billiard room with an RAF relic pool table. The freshwater swimming pool has direct access to the beach and has a pool bar as well as a paddling pool for children. Around the pool, there are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas at no cost to hotel guests. For the sports enthusiasts, there are tennis, squash, and volleyball courts, as well as darts, table tennis, catamaran sailing, and windsurfing facilities. Only 25 metres away from the resort is a flourishing house reef, ready for exploratory snorkellers. The resort also has a professionally managed diving base.
